15 years and 339 days later, this map has been downloaded 82,433 times so far (I even had to also put a comma as a separator sign to make it more readable) and its daily average of downloads is 14.17! It has 231 comments now that I wrote one too, which to my knowledge is the largest number of comments for a release on ..::LvL. Not even ZTN3DM1 (108 comments at the moment) and not even RUNTFEST (201 comments at the moment) can boast of this. As far as I know, today this is the most downloadable map on ..::LvL in history!

Maggu has created something that is absolutely outstanding in the eyes of not only the Quake 3 community, but also many other gamers. The video of the author showing the map currently has more than 2 million and 600 thousand views (youtu.be/34LtrnnXQTc) and it's hard to find a Q3 video that is more popular than this one. Maybe the famous video called "Fast Inverse Square Root — A Quake III Algorithm" by Nemean, which has more than 4 million and 600 thousand views right now.

I'm sure this map has helped a lot of people get (re)introduced to Q3 custom maps, maybe even Quake 3 in general and maybe even the entire Quake series. I think this is a Quake III analogue of Doom II's Doom Center or an old-school analogue for MyHouse.wad / My House. In conclusion, that is what happens when someone makes a high quality work of art at the collision of two already popular universes :) Undoubtedly, this is one of the first retro levels to show to those who say, "They didn't know how to make good maps back then" :]

EDIT: I was reminded that the map with the largest number of comments is actually Japanese Castles by G1zm0. The fact that I forgot about this map's popularity is quite ironic because this is one of my favorite maps too, and I had read all the comments for this release several months ago or so.

How are you supposed to get the BFG on top of the building without rocket jumping? The grey building front and center on this screenshot, you can RJ onto that bus, then onto the building, but surely there is a catapult or TP up there also.

Oh ya it works in ioquake3 (as long as com_zonemegs is 128, 64 is not enough.) Problem with ioquake3 is that it doesn't render 4k properly, it only shows part of the screen. I guess I'll have to settle with 1920x1080 for this map. For some reason the Steam version of Quake 3 renders 4k properly, but not a standalone installation of Quake 3, I haven't yet figured out why that is.

@Sly Fox: Just tested this map again and it works for me. Nothing special about my PC, Intel i5 CPU, Linux Mint, old graphics card, ioquake3 (64bit) with com_hunkMegs 128 and com_soundMegs 8. The max screen res I run is 1600x1200 and I did test this map at that screen size without a problem.

I recommend removing all other PK3 except the the PAK*.pk3 files and try again with a lower screen size. Start at something really small like 640x480. Another option is to remove (or backup, rename) your q3config.cfg so you get a default set-up, then try again.

The fact that someone ran this map on a phone points to an issue at your end. It would be really nice to work out what that issue is as well.

Wow 4 years later and I still can't play this map! I tried com_soundmegs 256, it crashes on game launch, 128 is max. I do +set com_zoneMegs 512 in command line parameter, and I do com_hunkmegs 512 in autoexec.cfg. ioQuake3 doesn't render 4K properly, the only res I play nowadays, but stock Quake3 does it fine. I now have 32GB of RAM but I don't think that makes a difference, something else is going on I think, some hardcoded limitation in the software.

It's not com_hunkmegs, not com_zonemegs, but the problem is actually com_soundmegs, up that to 128 or 256 via +set com_soundmegs 128 or +set com_soundmegs 256 when you start the game. Hope this helps a ton of people having trouble with this map.

@Sly Fox: Increase com_zoneMegs by wordpad, not in game as it will always discard your megs settings. Ignore the notice to not edit config.cfg, there you will find your com_hunkMegs and com_zoneMegs, there you will increase the values. If even this won't help you, try IOquake3 - ioquake3.org/ Hope it will help you.

@all others: This is pretty nice map and it's a shame that full map of Springfield is unplayable. I like most the pigtrails on the ceiling as it plays the most known soundtrack produced by Homer Simpson :D

I used to be able to play this map just fine using com_hunkMegs 400. Now on a newer computer not even com_hunkMegs 512 works. This is using Quake3 1.32c. I get Z_Malloc: failed on allocation of 8388632 bytes from the main zone. I noticed alot of these warnings: WARNING: CM_GridPlane unresolvable.

I tried upping com_zoneMegs, it says it is latched, but never takes affect, even after quitting.

Z_Malloc error is related to memory allocation. See this wiki entry for some details en.wikipedia.org/w...mory_allocation

If you get this error, then your issue is memory allocation related. The first thing to try is to add "+set com_hunkmegs 512" to your start command. I use IOQuake3 and have a heap of batch files depending on what I'm doing. Here is an example of one:

start ioquake3.x86 +set com_hunkmegs 512 +set fs_homepath f:\ioquake3 +set sv_pure 0 +set r_fullscreen 0 +set r_mode 6 +map ""

The "+set com_hunkmegs 512" part allocates at least 512 MB to "Virtual Memory" when IOQuake3 is started. Without "+set com_hunkmegs 512", only 64MB is allocated.

Try adding the command line switch and see if that helps.

If that does not help, could you state your video card details, model and memory size.

@99ymx: To get this map to work, try doing some of these things:
  • Go to the console by pressing the ~ button, then type in /seta com_hunkmegs (number ranging from 100 to 256)

  • Update your graphics drivers to the latest version released

  • Lower graphics to the lowest possible. If it runs pretty smoothly, you could try slowly putting the graphic detail up a notch

  • Put more RAM in your computer

  • Quit out of any program you don't need running

  • Personally, I didn't even need to tweek with the hunkmegs, I just needed to lower the graphic detail. I did the same thing for a few other rather graphical maps, and it works fine.

While the map is very memory intensive, the HUGE wav file in the Stonecutters building promoting a myspace band wasn't necessary and it didn't help. Remember that ambient sounds never stream so it has to load the whole thing and keep playing it/mixing it within radius.

Also, a texture atlas for unique, non-tiled textures (such as pictures) could help the texture switching performance, and not only that but could help correct your non-power-of-2 texture artifacts by having your pages in the power of 2 (like pages of 512x512) so there's no odd rounding up of texels.

@Titan: Because the maps listed here on ..::LvL are designed to be played with the full release version of Quake 3 Arena.

OpenArena is a 'free' game based on the Quake 3 Arena source code, designed to be played as OA, a stand alone game. OA is NOT Q3A, it is OpenArena. If you want to play OA with Q3A content, that is total fine, but when you run into issues, only the OA people will be able to help you.

IOQuake3, however is NOT a stand alone game, but a modified (free) version of the Q3A engine, which has been designed as a replacement for Q3A. You still need Q3A to use IOQuake3, however OA works without Q3A - that is the difference.

The first one conceals Simpson Map: it doesn't run! is it a ram problem? All others required features are satisfied.
The second one implies arena's slots: adding downloaded arenas the older ones disappear! Is it because there is a limited number of addings?

BTW, If you you follow the link I posted below for the ATI drivers, there is a option to select your language before the download link - select English and you will download the English version of the drivers. More time reading and less time posting broken English messages will save you a lot of time.

@SW12: Yes, but, there is a '1.32c' version which is not officially linked to, but is on the id Software FTP server. You will need the official 1.32 update installed before using 1.32c. The zip file contains a version for Win32, OSX and Linux. The FTP server is here:
    ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/

Or you could just run ioquake3 - ioquake3.org/ - or any of the other alternatives available now.

SW12, first you have to get map making programs for Quake 3 Arena.

There are two map making programs for Quake 3 Arena, q3radiant and GTKRadiant.

q3radiant can be downloaded from id software's website:

    www.idsoftware.com.../techdownloads/

Search through the "Quake 3 Arena" list until you see (in the "Title" column), "Q3A Tools", and the download link is across the page.

GTKRadiant 1.5.0 can be downloaded from:

    www.qeradiant.com/cgi-bin/trac.cgi

Search the page for the "GTKRadiant 1.5.0" section and underneath the "new and improved features" is the "downloads" section and the download link for GTKRadiant 1.5.0 is "Windows Installer".

A Blue and yellow hot-Air balloon with someone hanging from it holding a sign. How silly. Then I watched a response vid on yourtube and got a close up on it and saw what it REALLY was.

It wasn't What I said I thought It was, It was The Principal:Skinners With a Sign saying: "Hi! I' M BIG BUTT SKINNER" on it. So you can already guess it wasn't that.

The 'dedicated' switch should be set at start-up, not from the console. It is related to starting the game as a dedicated server. You would need to pass '+set dedicated 2' when starting the server. Best to include this in a batch file. BTW, 'dedicated 2' would be for a public server, use 'dedicated 1' for a private server.

@Jarns: If you have installed the map correctly, you will find it under the Skirmish menu option. Alternatively, if you really want to load the map from the console, try:
    \map simpsons_q3

The pk3 file is simpsons.pk3, but the bsp file (the compiled map within the pk3) is called simpsons_q3.bsp and that is what you need to use on the console.

@ Mark: Still, it's the details that make this map a big achievement; as far as I remember, maggu never intended to make a Q3 map for pure fighting, it was always thought of being a pure fun map. In this case, there HAVE to be features that do not resemble normal Q3 mapping but the current map's theme(s). And regarding this point, the creator did a good job providing several hints to many episodes (old seasons though, but this project is an old one, too) and LOTS of other stuff which can be shown best at a Q3 unusual scale; it's just more impressive that way.

I'm gonna have to play the devil's advocate here... the map has received a lot of positive comments that i feel are undeserving... OK so it's a Simpson's map and alot of its popularity is largely due to the popularity of matt groenings cartoon franchise - but lets face it - when it comes down to it its basically a square with facades of buildings that cant be entered. The simpson house is the most complex but cramped and not to scale. no disrespect to the authors efforts but it doesn't possess much past the novelty of it all - point being diving board bouncepad (which did get a laugh out of me... load it with requisite simpson skins/bots "Look at that blubber fly..."

@deadmouse : That means (I think) that the PK3 on the server is different from the one on the client. The players and the server both need the same version of the map.

    @ SeriousSamuel1:
This map is huge - first you have to open the console and type '/com_hunkmegs 128'. This will set the RAM quake is allowed to use to 128. Then you may have to set your graphic settings 'fast' and it should work.

Read Tigs very important notes and the map readme - this will help you.

I got it work with a radeon 9600 mobility (128mb). Everything I had to do was setting com_hunkmegs to 128 and turning the quality lower but if you do it like this you wont have the full experience of this map..

It's a damn fine map but you need a lot of players to have real fun with it. I think that this will hit the 30'000 d'loads in a few weeks!!!

The Z_Malloc error is due to the fact that this map has extensive use of curve patches. For those of you who don't know; curve patches are used in a quake3 map to create curved surfaces.
If you get this error: "Z_Malloc: failed on allocation of 4194328 bytes from the main zone", make sure you set "r_subdivisions" to 4 or higher, as this cvar controls curve patch subdivisions and this map uses an unbelievable amount of these curve patches, and if set it to any number lower than 4, it will basically choke the q3 engine. Also, do set your com_hunkmegs cvar to an appropiate amount.
Doing these to things allowed me to play this map. The level of detail is incredible! You see, all of Bart's and Lisa's toys are made with curve patches, instead of md3 map models, so setting "r_subdivisions 2" will kill the game engine.

I (now) believe the issue is related to video card memory, not PC memory. I've had a look at the textures and some are way oversized - and there are so many as well. If people like, I'll put together an experimental download for people with issues to try, but for now, please include details about your video card if you are having an issue.

help!!! i've downloaded quake 3 arena, demo version, about 40Mb.
i want to to add the simpson's map, but i can't find inside the quake dir the file to edit for the memory.
and then if i try to insert the map inside the map dir ( where i have the demomap ) and launch the game it gives me an error, but not the one written in the readme file.

    so my questions are:

    • the demo version is right or i have to download the full version? in that case, where i can find that free?
    • how can i join the multiplayer game? if i try it ask me a server address, but i don't know it.
    THANK U

textures/simpsons-colors is a missing folder, because i had the textures shown in the editor inside there. The "real" colors ingame are created by shaders. so /simpsons-colors is no longer needed as a source of imagefiles. I guess i should have cleaned up the shaders....
btw, IOquake3 is great! The maps runs a lot faster on it. If you do not use this, try to use at least the latest version of Quake III Pointrelease 1.32c. Otherwise you'll encounter even more errors.

    Cheers

Please do not post incorrect information. The version you can download from here will work without any mods. There are a few warnings while loading, but I can tell you that other levels have more console errors than this one.

The screenshots and video were all done with this version, using IOQuake3 - ioquake3.org/ - on a Pentium D 2.80GHz CPU with both 1GB of RAM and 3GB of RAM. It worked fine both times.

The commandline I used to start Q3 in a batch file is as follows:
    start ioquake3.x86 +set fs_homepath e:\ioquake3 +set sv_pure 0 +set r_fullscreen 1 +set r_mode 6 +map ""

Then I used the Skirmish menu to start the map. Nothing special at all. If you are having issues, the problem must be at your end.

Based upon recent posts across the net I don't think the latest version works for anybody. If yours is working can you please re-download the latest 17,930 KB version and try again. I went through the shader files and there were tons of bad links (ex. instead of textures/sympsons-cars/schoolbus03.jpg it linked to the non-existent textures/sympsons-colors/schoolbus03.jpg and so on.

With hunkmegs set to 100+ the map at least starts to load, but the items and bots show as grey squares with white trim (missing textures?), then returns to the menu the moment before it should load. Any ideas. This can't be a memory issue because I have 512 MiB with 420 free. I suspect that since the vast majority of people can't get this map to work that it rellies on a mod/texture/... file that some people happen to have so it works for them. If so, what is it? I have a clean install of the official Quake III Arena (no mods, added textures ...) & a 1.7 GHz 512 MiB system, so I'm forced to conclude there's a common dependancy (ex. mod) that many people, including the map's creator, happens to have but don't realize it.

@Wolfseye: You need to have at least 256MB of memory free before you set hunkmegs that high. Quake 3 will only use (I think) what it is available. By this I mean, if you have run Windows XP and have 256MB, Windows will be using about 90MB to 130MB without anything else running (that means no anti-virus, no web browser, no email, no chat application). Setting the hunkmegs value high simply will not work with low system RAM. If you have applications running in the background, they will also be using some RAM, which will leave even less for Quake 3.

If you have heaps of RAM however, you have another problem, and if you have Vista - well, you may be on your own :]

I suggest trying this map with ioquake3 - ioquake3.org/ - works without a problem here.
