A faithful geometric tribute to the 1991 Virtuality classic. These maps translate the iconic checkerboard aesthetic of the first true VR shooters into Quake 3 Arena. High-speed action replaces the clunky 10fps movement of the past.

Both Dactyl Nightmare (1991) and Dactyl Nightmare SP (1994) are included. The levels are close to the originals except for a missing pterodactyl and are a little larger when you cross-reference original footage. A thin layer of Q3A elements have been added as well.

How do they play? Absolutely crazy and very repetitive. The default bot load is on the heavy side, leading to constant frags and a lot of chances. Drop one bot and the gameplay feels very different and more enjoyable, at least for a short while.

There is also the question of: why do this? Based on the readme, Devil Master's intent is clear. To make the original Virtual Reality experience available to as many people as possible. Using Q3A as a base, there are many VR options available. Or, you can just load it up on a standard PC and enjoy.

If only the pterodactyl and the fear of it had been included.

Bonus: Footage of the original.

Ranked: No votes yet.
