Mine has to be 'Metropolis' It took me an average 2 years to finish and polish the extra's on the map. It has 15,000 + Hits/Downloads and won 2nd place in a Mapping Competition in 2008 Or 2007.

I'm currently producing my first map ever made for Quake 3 Arena, so that's the best map that I'm making at this point in time.

@fKd: Some of those texture could have been replaced with some of evillairs other (non commercial) textures. Do you know what map you got the textures from? Was it PhobosBase1?

I'm in a drought of inspiration and I have no Quake 3 map released but I can say that it's a tie between tsh2tourney1 (Quake 2) and DM-InsularGW (Unreal Tournament).

Intresting.. I design maps for UT2004 and UT3. My best map i designed & created for UT2004 was 'Terrorism World' It had over 25,000 hits/downloads.. You can check it out on mapraider.com.. If its still there.

Alexje, there's a German tutorial by DaEngineer, but I don't think there are any Dutch tutorials out there. Your English seems quite good though - better than many English-speaking people! You could visit the sticky threads in the Level Editing board in Quake 3 World's forums with Google translate: translate.google.com/translate

@themufinator: Yup you got that right Muffin :).
I've never finished a map, I have so many ideas in my head and I start doing the idea and before I know it there's another idea in my head. If you looked at the amount of unfinished shit I have you'll think there's something wrong with me.

@Satan Fang: Just think of an idea you think that will make your map popular. I'm currently working on a Saw themed map. It's going to have rooms with traps and also you can hear Jigsaw's voice. It's kinda creepy since I tested it out but it's unfinished. I'll post the map when it's done. It may take a couple of weeks or months.
The map I've worked most on is The Gloom, but I doubt it'll be very good. Most people have come to me and say it's focused more on experimentation rather than gameplay and most Quake fans prefer gamplay anytime.

@Satan Fang: Gameplay is important in custom maps. If the Gameplay is laggy then there is no use but if the Gameplay is good, then you might as well just let us have a go at the map. If you dont think your confident enough to post the map, Test the map out with 2 - 4 or more to see if Gameplay is good.
It is posted, just fallen to the bottom.

@Satan Fang: That's great if you posted it :). I'm gonna test it and write a review on it.
It's not even finished, I meant I posted it in the forums.

I'm absolutely amazed by the sheer amount of time people put into these maps. Too bad I can't play them. Some of the maps I've seen on here are stunningly good loooking, and the layouts all look really creative.

I haven't got a computer strong enough to run pretty much any 3d engine at all, nor do I think I'd even be able to handle an advanced map editor myself.

I've been into forge in Halo Reach and I enjoy map designing, competitive layouts and all of this good stuff. All you've got to work with in the Reach forge tool is grey blocks with ugly textures, though. That also means we don't spend as much time just constructing our maps, you know. I haven't worked on any map for longer than a month, ever. Our simple, ugly little maps can be built in merely like one day, which is absolutely ridiculous, when taken into context.

But yeah, OT: My best own map would have to be Taurus, a small, simple five room asym with two sets of two way teleporters. I've built one other map that's actually quite good by most like real map design standards as well, but that one was just an adoption of this other guy's design, so it hardly counts.

I've got this one old really terrible gameplay video on Taurus, from before the major TU, that fixed the major issues with the game, came along, so yeah, it looks sort of broken gameplay wise, I suppose. And I wasn't playing very well either. but whatever. It shows the map, in case anyone would be interested.

Couldn't find a video for Arca, but I've got a link to a thread for it on forgehub.

Please don't ridicule me for liking a noob franchise like Halo =). I really can appreciate the much more competive gameplay of games like quake and UT, but I just can't handle the controls on a computer, and the map editors are way to complex for my little hick brain.

And don't mind my English if it's whacky at places. I'm Swedish, and English is my fourth language, along with Swedish, Finnish and German.

@FragTastic: Lol, it's Hulter, not Hutler. Everybody gets that wrong, for some odd reason. I'm guessing it's because it bears resemblance to the name of a certain quite unpopular, mustachioed chap.

But uhm, yeah. Halo reach pre patch was complete and utter rubbish, what with the broken, random DMR bloom and what not, but I actually do quite enjoy it now after the title update.

In terms of game mechanics, it's really not even close to as good as CE was, but what I like about it is obviously the forging and map design community, which for that matter happens to be completely dead by now. Just trying to cope until Halo 4 and a bigger community hopefully comes back.

Oh, and I suppose you'd have to consider that the PC version of combat evolved has a quite good map editor and even modding tool, so that really is superior to Reach whatever way you choose to look at it.
