I like playing in this arena. On a 1 v 1 game, it is a very fast, nervous and tactic game.
I always play with the "Alternative Fire" mod from Neil Toronto. It is a mod that is perfectly suited to the geometry of the map, you can shoot rocket throught the teleporter, use traps to fool your opponents...
The bots play well, they are predictable, but efficient, and they have a fateful tendency to jump on their own in the void...

I've never been a big fan of this map. I appreciate the inherent challenges of a spacemap (and if a spacemap doesnt possess any real threat of falling into the void then imo it is just not a well designed space map - and on this point unitool has done well), i also appreciate the uniqueness of its game flow but i just can't ever get any enjoyment out of it, i find it too disjointed and awkward - telefrags come too easily and unexpectedly, quad point is too cramped and jumppads are underutilised. Having said all this i love unitools other maps.

I hated this map at first but after you really get it down, it's extremely "fun" to play on. There's some sweet rj+jump pad jumps you can make too. Good stuff unitool.

Oh yeah, don't forget to check out the tourney version that comes in the pack.

Errrm, This map looks cool but it plays awfully. Lets say that u r in control with 100/200 and u r going up a jpad and then suddently a recently spawned player rails u out of the map, that is just plain silly. on tourney maps u must work hard to get the control back but apparently not on this one. It could have been a great map but u had to make a space map out of it.

The bots play it well, and the map performs well on my computer. The lighting is adequete and sets a good atmosphere.

even though there has been a lot of effort into the aesthetics I still don't like the way it looks. But this me being subjective.

Nice! I love the curves. The contrasting colors of blue and yellow give it a warm feeling in the cold of space.

I tried Johnny Law's "bungie frag"....shit, I was laughing so hard, by the time I remembered to teleport....too late! Nice flow and I give it a big thumbs up in the scrappin department! Lotsafun!

Superb space map; had a lot of fun playing this one. Great layout and excellent connectivity; looks nice as well. Liked the way that the weapons and ammo were placed so close to the edge, this added an extra dimension of skill to the map, as you have to be cautious when going for them as a careless movement or rocket splash damage will almost certainly send you careering to an untimely end.

The addition of a few more suitably positioned bounce pads might have increased the amount of aerial combat, but apart from this, it's a great arena.

SCORE: 10 (It was fun)

The RG is useful no matter where you are on the map. But anyway, since you can fall or teleport directly from the top level to the RG level, and then teleport directly back up, it's hardly a long trip.

Well, I say it is a space map. The emphasis of items on the edge, and therefore the "Oh fuck that guy shot me and now I'm falling into the void so I'll hit him with RL splash and take him down here with me HAHAH DIE BITCH" space mappy feel applys. (If anyone knows wtf I'm saying, please tell me I'd like to now ;) ).

But everything was good. The ramps around the "main" platform, which were holding most of the items, still didn't become the complete focus of the game. Some good fights were had on both upper and lower parts of the "main" platform.

All the guns were well placed, though the far-down RG was a little weird. It just isn't worth the trip to have a RG which won't even be useful till you get back up top of the map.

But maybe Unitool doesn't like the RG <g>. I would have preferred Invis to Quad, personally, but I did like the bluelight theme. The tele's made for good connectivity, a quicker route up and down than the ramps. Finally, the GL was surprisingly rather useless, with all the grens going off into space. Kill it and put a YA there, I say! (As if what I say matters *sniff)

9 outa 10!

  1. I really like this map. I think I most like the vertical
action you can cook up in it. Edges bounce you around a

bit every now and then, but you can get used to that.

  1. There are pleanty of OSP servers that run custom
map modes...

128.2.249.213 and 128.2.249.213 (when it's not RA3)

are 2 examples. Get in, callvote mode to something like

1v1_custom, and there you go. Hehe, it even will

callvote promode 1! S*#t, the OSP will even let you

do "clanarena" and "1v1_arena"; there really is no need

for RA3. And you can combine clanarena/1v1arena WITH

CPM! Now we're talking!

  1. Rate of download is a function of the server's max
rate. Since lots of servers cap client rate at 10k to

keep modem players happy, map download is indeed

agonizing.

Thanks, Redfive.

It's been a while since ran a Q3A server, but I think server admins are able to adjust the d/l speed.

I assume most leave it set to a trickle, so that map downloads are not hogging valuable server bandwidth.

At last, people are making space maps that look good !!! Unfortunately, servers that play custom maps are few and far between, and no matter how many maps you have, you always get kicked (autoDL off) at one point cuz you don't have the map. And what's with the autoDL anyway?! Even with an ADSL connection I get like 1k/sec dload speed, therefore killing the whole purpose of autoDL. In the Q2 days that was unheard of, as you could get a new map with a 56k line in around 5-10 minutes tops.

Anyways, enough of the banter. Congrats unitool on a very fine piece of map !!! Definitely a 9.

A great map, I cant really include much more than has been writed before. This is one of the greatest "space" maps I've seen cos it isnt really a space map, u know =). The theme of the map it's similar to unitooldm1,2 and it's great. This is a very "Unitoolesque" map to say it someway =].

I've been following this map for a while, and it really does rock!

Bot wise, against 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 it's a great map.

Human wise, I've only ever played it 1v1 on both maps, both of which were great!

Truely a remarkable map.

yeah, this was the map that unitooldm2 should have been.

unitooldm2 is a perfect example of a map produced under pressure, and rushed out too quickly.

I'm thinking about deleting the pk3 for unitooldm2, and stamping "recalled" across all the screenshots on my page. ;)

Thanks again everyone. Getting compliments from mappers I respect and admire is very gratifying.

This is one of my favorite Q3 maps for fast small-to-medium FFA play, and I think it could be interesting for 1-on-1 as well (both versions actually having something to recommend them for duel play). The "hardcore" might dismiss it offhand because it's different, but I think you should take a long hard look at how the map actually plays before doing so.

This is like a space map that's not quite a space map. :-) You have the potential to fall into the void, but there are also many almost-enclosed areas, and ways that you can fall from one level to another without "voiding yourself". You have a tremendous amount of mobility and many lanes for viewing/firing on this map, but the structure also imposes some restrictions that make it play more tactically than a "pure" space map. It has a nice balance between horizontal and vertical flow as well.

Also, don't be misled by Tig's use of the word "gothic". You won't see hardly any maps that resemble this one either in texturing or architecture.

Final random note: the big skybox adds a fun touch in that you often have time to rail (or be railed by) players that are falling into the void. For an amusing challenge, see how many times you can intentionally administer a "bungee frag": get the rail, RL, and PT; use the RL to knock someone into the void; jump after them; rail them on the way down; PT back to safety. Just don't forget the PT or you'll look pretty dumb. :-)

It's pretty sweet getting a good review on LVL!

I get a good laugh out of bouncing people off the edge when I'm playing space maps, so that's why many of the items are close to the edges.

This is probably my favorite space map to date. It actually has some nice vertical elements mixed into it. I didn't like some of the item placements being so close to the edges and with those angled ledges it's easy to do that little "hop" and fall right off. Other than that it's a sweet map though.
