On the main page there is now an "Image quality" link. This will allow anyone (with cookies enabled) to switch between "high quality" and "standard" images where possible.

All small screenshot images are support and screenshots from this February (2014) are also support. The panoramas are not support at all and I'm not sure they will be - but you never know.

The high quality images will take more bandwidth for sure (instead of 45kb to 60kb per screenshot they are around 200kb).

If you can not see the difference don't worry and used the standard quality. If you are on a mobile device or a high density monitor there is a very good chance you will notice the difference.

You can also download the screenshot quickly with the "download" link under them. You can check if there is a hi-def screenshot by looking at this link too. If there is more than a "640x480" option then there is a hi-def version available.

Shouldn't this be default, I think most people who visits this site and use the internet overall these days have a modern computer, laptop or stationary, most screens uses 16:9 with at least 1080p, most people have a lot higher.

Same goes with bandwidth, how many people really uses a modem to browse these pages? I understand that you sometimes have a fee per downloaded MB, but how common is that these days, "2015" and how many people really browses this page through a cell phone?

Just some random thoughts =)

I'm really in two minds over this one. I personally use the Hi-Def images because I do think the clarity is better even on a Desktop PC. I'm also aware that people may not see the difference on a Desktop or even a mobile device - so what's the point in sending them the larger files.

The standard images do load a lot quicker, but we are talking fractions of a second for most people.

I think once Hi-Density monitors become the default (which I'm sure will happen), that would then be the time to also default to Hi-Def images.

Happy to be swayed to change things around based on what people think however!
