Originally released in May 2001, this is an updated version of Killer's custom CTF map, MKBASE - Feel The Base, adhering to the same layout and Fingers' well-known ikbase texture set. Designed specifically for Quake III Team Arena, MKBASE-TA includes all 3 Team Arena weapons and supports all Team Arena game types.
In the team flag rooms you will find the Guard and Scout runes along with the Chain Gun and the Proximity-Mine Launcher, which replace the Shot Gun (SG) and Grenade Launcher respectively. A Doubler rune spawns in the corridors behind the team bases where the Regeneration power-up spawns in the original. Depending on the game type, the middle ground spawns alternately a Red Armour, White Flag, or Skull Generator and off to each side of this area you will also find the Nail Guns. Along with the inclusion of ammo for the new weapons, the item placement remains, otherwise, faithful to the original. The new weapons are a welcome addition here as the original version has way too many SGs for its size.
The relatively small size of MKBASE-TA makes it feel a little too cramped at times and games a little too hectic compared to the original. This is especially true for Harvester and One Flag CTF which feel best-suited for 2-on-2 games but given the slim chance of finding people to play with these days this is not really a deficit; a bot file is also included. MKBASE-TA plays best in Overload and standard CTF with 3 players aside feeling just about right. Given its size, I feel the Scout rune could just as easily have been left out but there is definitely enough weapons and ammo to make the inclusion of the Ammo-Regen rune unnecessary.
For those fans of Team Arena who are after a small level to play on, give this one a try, but for me there are far better custom levels available for Team Arena. And keep in mind, MKBASE-TA is designed specifically with Team Arena in mind. Textures and entities specific to this mod will not load in versions of Quake III that do not support these items, including the original game. In which case, I would strongly recommend that people download and play the original. Definitely one for the Team Arena fans out there.
