Really intense battles here. The look and feel of this map really revolutionized what can be done with Q3. I mean, just look back at how long ago this was and see all the other maps (gothic/base galor). This one is a true stand out. Play this Q2 map all the time and this version takes it to a whole new level.08 Dec 2006, 12:40 pm

Utterly overdone and overrated map, nice looks, yeah (when it first came out), but there are so many better maps in term of playing style. Sometimes gave me weird Quake1 feeling inside the house. Real building based maps are not my style. Looks 9/10 Gameplay 5/10Not registered

Now this I like. Both the DM and CTF versions are excellent, nice layout and the item/weapon placments are great. but still, it has been said before, its too square! and some of the textures are very plain. That aside this is one of the best maps out their, bots play well and netplay is fun.Not registered

Too SQUARE, no rounded surfaces or walls in the whole map. A 3rd path to the opposing bases would have been good (ie. water pools and central underground room[s] connecting flag rooms). But lots of funNot registered

Cool map. The look is obviously cool. I also like the layout of the temples, being able to go from any temple entrance to any flag-room entrance. My only complaint is that the RL room is too dark. I've seen a few very small areas in other maps that were also too dark, and even one entire map that was really dark. All of the Id maps are fine except for a few small corners. I think it depends on the OpenGL drivers. If someone tests a map with OpenGL drivers that make things bright they will overcompensate with the dark, causing things to be *really* dark on some OpenGL setups.Anyway, something for the map-makers to consider: An area that is dark on your system may not be that dark on another, and vice versa. Not registered

I agree, this one is visually tuning. It's just great how realistic it is but it preserves a great diversity and architecture complexity. Something rare for the house theme, japanese or not. But for the DM map there are few little flaws. In FFA the bot play isn't enough well spread through the whole level and the RL is too dominant. In Team the item placement is more interesting and this help to spread better the fights through the map, and the RL doesn't dominate as much. But in this mode the LG is really missing.
For the CTF, I didn't like this totally symetric choice. It's disturbing. But it plays well anyway.
So overall I gave it a 9, could have gave it a 9.5 for it's great and refreching look but it's not possible and 10 is too much for my opinion. Not registered

This is one of my top 5 favorite maps. One of only about 3 good maps that are in the top 10 here. So many other maps that rule, but people just go with the maps people talk about a lot. I know a good map when i see it. Original textures, a different look, and cool graphics. All the maps that i saw that looked different were better than most of these top 10 ones. These ones just look the same as all the other q3 maps. This is just my opinion, but i think a lot of maps are just overlooked. Not registered

Hmm, v.pretty, I love the ninja - thru the window effect :) (beats Jacky Chan any day :)
erm, for a link, I uploaded it too (if you mind I'll take it down)
www.djkrambo.here.co.uk/files
Also, I made a ctf map, first idea was based on a bit of a Minoan castle (I'm from Crete).
(well, just the red pillars:P)
But I'm a newbie, and my map is crappily textured. What do you reckon, if I send you the .map file or something, will you tidy it up and make it look good?
I'm sure you can find tons of pictures of Knossos online for textures etc :)
(hihi, I'm such a cheeky bastard)
tis under the beta section right now if you wanna have a look
Anyways, your map is great m8 :)

Awesome map, especially the ctf version.
Havent acutally played the ctf version in a game but i would like to. Love to see how i could work in that jump through the front window into an assault.
And Bauul you can get rid of the missing textures.
Do this
Open the .pk3 file with winzip (both the map .pk3 file and the .pk3 file you want to get a texture out of say pak01 from /baseq3)
You will need to run the map in quake 3 and as soon as you spawn bring down the console. Write down the name and path of the textrue thats missing (/textures/xxx.tga).
Then go back to winzip and find a texture u think will look like the one thats missing. Extract that file to c:texturesxxxx where xxxx is whatever the path was in the console.
Go to the japandm or ctf .pk3 file and go to add. Add the file that you extracted but be sure that u have the save directory option checked (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT). If its not in the right directory inside the pk3 file q3 wont find it.
Start up the game and have some fun.Not registered

As I said when commenting on Two Halves, this map and Two Halves are really the only finished feeling ctf maps out there.. others have the design but just have quite made it in the atmosphere department. 9 outa 10.

Does anybody one know if Japanese castles will work also with Unreal Tournemant. It is much better game because of Quake3 not being done when released. Quake3 is so sloppy. might look a little better but is only 5% as much game as UT. Did Quake guys decide to release unfinished game and just let Mod makers finish game for them???? When Q3fortress come out I'll play Quake3 again. Quake3 will be worth buying in 18 months once Mods are more out there. :-)Not registered

A great place to hang out and eat Sushi, then put a rail slug up someone's booty. The jump pad through the window was inspired. Though the bot action tends to concentrate a bit much near the RL, a good bot map. All in all, a great place to kill or be killed. Not registered

your a nice guy played with ya and this is a very pretty map :-) but I just wanted to say I find it difficult to move on japanctf because of the layout and the long stairs to the flag room are very ackward to move and fight on! just my 2 cents
also I disagree with everyone else I don't think this map touches the zoid three wave maps especially 2 and 3 as far as playability.

Hi sleepy,
I didn't make this map to look like a camp, I made it from looking at pictures of beatufull ancient Japanese Castles in japan. I love the archetecture of them. I never built these maps to offend anyone. I hope you will try not to
see this map as anything else but a map for a game, built
for people to see and enjoy, not to offend anyone.
I apologize if it offended you, that was not my intentions.

Sleepy - you have a right to your opinion, but i think you have taken this just a little too far... its a map for Quake3Arena - a game, not that different to Tekken (not sure if thats the right spelling). Comments like yours are not exactly helping fight stereotyping - I would say if anything its supporting stereotyping, so I've removed the very uncalled for post. If there is any more like it, I'll ban you. You are welcomed to explain just how this map support(s) the stereotypical view of Japanese culture - but don't bring in someones parents, esp. if you don't know anything about them.

Great looking map... although it lacks in the gameplay department. I think there is a lot of "stuff" laying around that really doesnt need to be there. All the little pagodas and swords and things... They would look great in a single player mission based Q2 map but when I am blowing people up in DM or CTF, give me some solid walls in a base anyday.

sleepy, I believe Paul J mentioned that Paul J mentioned that they tried using curves for ground, hills, ect, and that players didnt have much control while running over them, thats one reason I didnt use them there.
Also using curves there would have driven up the r_speeds, which means the map would have ran slower for you. besides, I didnt make this map for you sleepy =), I made it for ppl that might enjoy it, you don't ahve to play it =)Not registered

This map looks nice, despite the odd textures and mysteryous thick white fog(?!?!?)... but a maps looks do not make it a good map. This map plays horribly. There is a lot of completely unnescessary detail and with q3's curves, the terrain could have been done much better.
I dont know what you people see in this map.Not registered

Once again, I have to agree with everyone and say that the level looks awesome, aside from the unrealistic looking jump pads (no object in real life is pure black w/o reflections and shadows). The DM level is not that great for playability, however the CTF level plays quite nicely- my only gripe is that I like my CTF levels a little larger than this. At any rate, definetly a worthy download. Not registered

Though some people may say that this map just looks good without any playability, I'd have to disagree with them. I have played a lot of games so far on these maps and they were all very fun (I especially like the ctf map). Even after reading http://www.planetquake.com/bighouse/Q3Reviews/Japanese.htm I still enjoy this map and only agree with them on their point of weapon placement (unlike what they say, many of the battles that I fought in took place in corridors, not just "circling" battles in large rooms). Of all the custom maps that I have downloaded (and I have downloaded nearly every map on this site) this map is one of the best and it is the only custom map that I see each time I refresh my servers. Not registered

This has to be my favorite user-made level so far for Q3.
Just gorgeous.
HOWEVER, I've found a rather serious weak link in the implementation of the bots.
(I play the bots most of the time, since my ping sucks hard.)
If you go to the little upstairs room where the quad/haste spawns, you can fire through the fence, and rack up frags by the dozen, since the bots never know you're there, and rarely bother to come around it to get the quad!
Oh, well. Easy kills are fun too, I guess...Not registered

I liked the fog. It looks really cool as you walk down the stairs. It is a bit weird as you come out, though. I think it would have worked better if the fog was placed in a dead end, or if the fog was deeper. I'd like to see a Japanese garden/castle at night... give the cool lanterns a reason to be there. =)Not registered

I'm with Fingers on the texture problem - if you use something that is NOT part of the pak0.pk3 then include it in your <filename>.pk3, and include it as something like textures/<filename>/textname.jpg or scripts/<filename>/scriptname.sharder - this is the ONLY way to make sure your map will work how you want it to, on every users system. Not registered

I see... No, I didn't read the text file. Still, in my opinion an add-on level should work in vanilla Q3. I don't play CTF, so I have no reason to download several megs of a CTF level pack... Just because some add-on level uses one or two of its textures is not enough. (Maybe he could've included the extra textures in his pk3?)
And I did say I like the level... But it doesn't change the fact that it runs at ~20fps on my machine at some places, and I collide into invisible walls when I try to jump around on the rocks, and that I can't see anything at places that are pitch black. Which is why I don't find it particularly playable, even though it's gorgeous to look at and thus very well worth a download. :PNot registered

*sound of jaw dropping* This is by far the best, most creative, well done level I have seen from the community thus far. All others have cosmetic problems like brushes overlapping, or walls that you can strafe through (fognhell), but this is by far the most pro, and the most flowing level I have played. I can only pray that more levels of this caliber come out of the q3a community. P.S. I dunno what you all are smoking, I think that the fog gives it a nice Mt. Fuji kinda effect. Not registered

Very nice... Good use of curves on the roofs, nice textures... I love the outside areas. Too bad it runs really slowly, and some textures are missing. It could use some more light as well, and some of the clipping is overdone. More a work of art than a DM level... But certainly worth a download just to look at it.
I agree with Scamp here... Making all rounded edges in a traditional Japanese style building would be just plain silly. The author has used the curves perfectly where he should, as in the gorgeous rooftops. Not registered

Yeah, I agree with the majority on most things. Very nicely constructed and a decent layout. I thought there could have been a few more details on the walls in places.
One thing I wasn't keen on was the jump pads. The writing on them was cool but I thought the *pitch* black colour looked a little odd, some random noise on the texture would have been nice. I also thing the white fog looked a bit out of place but these are minor quibbles. All in all a good solid map, nice work Gizmo. Not registered

I actually had to suffer ReSeTH's rockets playtesting the level, but I found it a boatload of fun. The implementation of the Japanese style goes right down to the details, and I can only imagine the amount of research this must take.
I didn't really notice the fog problem that Tigger mentioned, at least not while in a deathmatch, so if there is anything it's probably minor.

this level looks great. G1zmo has done a great job with those new textures, it all looks very oriental and impressive. There was a game of 6 players on the uni network earlier but it was full so I couldn't play it (ctf version).
I actually like the block rocks although perhaps some more detail in them wouldn't have gone amiss. Still, who am I to criticise when I spent about 10 mins trying to figure out how to deselect a brush in q3r yesterday. Still, I'm starting to figure stuff out now - it's far harder to get to grips with than wc and the curve selection is a real pain when you have abunch of curves close to each other as their bounding boxes overlap and shit... er, anyway, I've gone off topic. Nice map G1zmo :)
